AB in Political Science / MAT in Social Studies

Share your passion for social sciences and how governments work with a Double Dawgs pathway that combines an undergraduate degree in political science with a master of arts in teaching in the area of social studies. Take undergraduate classes focusing on your passion for government, then take graduate-level courses focusing on teaching theory and practice.

You will leave UGA with advanced knowledge of your content area, solid teaching skills drawn from real-world classroom experience, and the ability to teach at a higher salary level.

All undergraduate students are eligible to apply for a Double Dawgs program. Please contact the program’s pathway advisor for more information.

Undergraduate Pathway Application

Prospective candidates may apply for this Double Dawgs pathway in the Fall of their 4th year by submitting a Double Dawgs pathway application through the undergraduate MFE COE Major Application.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria

  • Overall minimum GPA of 2.80
  • Completion of core areas I-VI
  • Completion of upper-level content courses
  • Completion of foreign language courses

You are ready to apply to the A.B. History/M.A.T. Social Studies Education pathway when you are starting your 4th year and have completed or are currently completing the minimum eligibility requirements.

If you are in the process of completing the required core course work, you may be provisionally accepted contingent upon satisfactory completion of the required courses while maintaining the required minimum 2.80 GPA for admission.

Graduate Program Application

Students will apply to the Graduate School in their final undergraduate semester. All applicants must meet the minimum requirements for entry into the M.A.T. Social Studies Education program.

Please follow the Graduate School’s application portal to complete the official M.A.T. Social Studies Education application.

In your application, you will attach the following documents:

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
  • Statement of purpose (short essay)
  • Official transcripts

Students with a GPA of 3.0 or above are exempt from the Graduate School’s required entrance exam, the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), and/or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).

Deadline to Apply

  • September 13 (Undergraduate Pathway Application)
  • March 15 (Graduate Application)

Almost all in-state students begin their studies at UGA paying limited tuition or fees. Please note that these amounts are subject to change and are meant to give prospective students an idea of the costs associated with a degree at the University of Georgia College of Education.

Students may qualify for a variety of assistantships, scholarships, and other financial awards to help offset the cost of tuition, housing, and other expenses.
