BSEd in Mathematics Education
A cohort model with small class sizes, an award-winning faculty, and extensive real-world teaching experience add up to prime preparation for teaching math at the middle and high school level.
Our mathematics education program combines studies in mathematics and the teaching of mathematics along with extensive field experiences to earn certification to teach in Georgia schools.

Curriculum
Continue your studies in the field of mathematics while exploring how to teach the subject. You will participate in field experiences to apply your coursework in the classroom.
During the course of the program, all candidates will have an opportunity to work with children in each of the grade bands as required by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. The grade bands are 6–8 and 9–12.
You will deepen your own understanding of mathematics through upper-level content courses while studying how to teach mathematics concepts to middle and high school students through courses covering:
- Mathematics curriculum in grades 6-12
- Teaching methods
- Using technology in teaching and learning
You will gain field experiences every semester. Begin by working with students one-on-one to gain experience in how students think and learn mathematics. You will progress to working with small groups of students to develop your abilities to support students’ learning.
In your third semester, you will design and implement activities with a classroom of students and learn how to facilitate discussions to maximize learning. In your final semester, you will teach and manage multiple classrooms during your student-teaching experience.
Starting in your third year, you will take 60 hours related to your program, including:
- 15 hours of upper-level mathematics
- 9 hours of electives, including at least one math and one math education course
- 21 hours during three semesters of courses in teaching math, including field experience
- 15 hours of student teaching and a related seminar in the final semester
You progress through the program with fellow students as cohorts, developing relationships that support learning and growth through your studies and often beyond. Small class sizes give you ample opportunity for individual attention and mentoring by our award-winning faculty, who keep current in the field through research and work in our partner schools.
You will earn initial certification to teach mathematics in grades 6-12 in Georgia public schools.

Admissions Requirements
The program admits up to 25 students each Fall semester for a Spring start. There may be more students who wish to enter than there are available seats in the program.
Prior to applying, you should consult with the Office of Undergraduate Advising . They can advise you on how to arrange your program of study prior to application, so you are well-positioned for enrollment if accepted.
Minimum Eligibility Criteria
- Overall minimum GPA of 2.75
- Completion of MATH 2250, MATH 2260, and MATH 3200, each with a grade of C or higher. MATH 3200 can be in progress.
- Completion of at least 30 hours of tutoring pre-college students in a structured setting in mathematics (grades 6-12) with required documentation (see application materials)

Special Requirements Upon Admission
- Maintain overall GPA of 2.75 (required for student teaching)
- Completion of all requirements set forth by UGA and the degree program
- Completion of all classes in the program (mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, general education), each with a grade of C or higher
- Conduct yourself professionally in all field placements
- Grade of B or higher in SPED 4030 for certification
- Teacher certification candidates must (1) earn a GaPSC Pre-Service Certificate prior to beginning field experience and (2) complete several assessments prior to certification

Part 1: Apply to the University of Georgia
Students must be accepted to UGA before entering into a College of Education program.
Part 2: Apply to the Initial Certification Program in Mathematics Education
You are ready to apply to the mathematics education program when you have completed or are currently completing the minimum eligibility requirements above. If you are in the process of completing any required core coursework, you may be provisionally accepted contingent upon satisfactory completion of the required courses while maintaining the required minimum 2.75 GPA for admission.

Selection Process
Applications are evaluated by a committee of faculty. Upon meeting the minimum eligibility criteria, students will be ranked using the following formula:
- Grade in MATH 2250 + grade in MATH 2260 + grade in MATH 3200 + overall grade point average
- A minimum of 9.75 points is required to be considered for admission. Students who have at least 9.75 points will then be rank-ordered, and the 25 students having the highest point totals will be admitted to the program each semester. In the event of a tie, we will admit 26 students.
Faculty will review students’ tutoring logs, evaluation, and reflection to assist in determining commitment to both their own learning and to students’ learning so that faculty can select the strongest possible cohort each semester. Experiences with students, with the diversity of people who populate Georgia’s schools, and with intellectual challenges will be highly valued.
Students who have been admitted for a given semester and are unable to enroll will be allowed into the next cohort.
Simply meeting the minimum eligibility criteria does not guarantee acceptance to the program. Applicants who are not accepted may apply again in the next application cycle.
