Children’s and Young Adult Literature Minor
Introduction
This minor is open to all UGA undergraduates and majors.
The minor in Children’s and Young Adult Literature is designed to serve the expressed interest and need of undergraduate students who wish to study children’s and young adult literature while also pursuing their degrees in education, the social sciences, and the humanities. As the role of literature in the lives of youth continues to become more important, opportunities to engage in civic conversations and intellectual engagement in environments such as universities are needed. This minor supports undergraduate students in professions that involve children, communities, and literature.
Objectives for this minor include:
- Identifying and describing literary concepts and elements of children’s and young adult texts and genres
- Researching, critiquing, analyzing, and evaluating children’s and young adult literature
- Demonstrating knowledge of major children’s and young adult awards, celebrated books, and acclaimed authors and illustrators
- Explaining how contemporary sociopolitical trends affect the publishing, teaching, and/or reception of children’s and young adult literature
- Articulating how children’s and young adult books address their audience’s identities, needs, and abilities
- Writing children’s and young adult texts representing different genres, effectively implementing the craft, strategies, and techniques needed within each genre
- Analyzing children’s and young adults’ reading responses
- Designing and implementing action plans to engage children and youth, as well as their families and communities, with reading
Students must meet all University requirements for minors:
- A minor must contain at least 9 hours of upper division coursework
- Courses taken to satisfy Core Areas I through V may not be counted as coursework in the minor
- Courses taken in Core Area VI may be counted as coursework in the minor

- LLED 5318: Culturally Diverse Children’s Literature, Grades P-8 (3 hours)
Elective Courses: 9 hours
