EdS in Education (Elementary Education)

The EdS in Elementary Education is for experienced teachers who would like to assume greater responsibility in educational decisions and processes within a school, district, and/or community.

Our program seeks to refine your skills in mentorship, professional development, curriculum, and assessment design by bringing critical theoretical conversations to bear on practical problems of practice in a collaborative and challenging atmosphere.

Highlights

  1. Collaborative environment
  2. Flexible course schedule designed for working professionals
  3. Individualized courses to suit your needs

Curriculum

This degree program consists of 30 semester hours of coursework beyond the master’s degree, covering five areas:

  • Curriculum and teaching in elementary environments
  • Social foundations
  • Psychological foundations
  • School subject areas
  • Research and evaluation

The program is planned as a logically organized whole, in light of your record in previous undergraduate and graduate courses, plus your entire professional experience. It includes 30 hours of coursework determined by you and your advisor; this allows for maximum flexibility in your classes as well as in your completion time. Topics include policy analysis and evaluation, and you will complete a research project, but you may be able to tailor courses toward a particular academic interest.

You will be required to take a minimum of five courses from our department (EDEC/EDMS/ESSE/ETAP) and a minimum of two courses from outside the Department of Educational Theory and Practice. You may also select other courses from offerings both in and outside of the College of Education.

Additional information and disclosures regarding state licensure for professional practice in this field can be found at the UGA Licensure Disclosure Portal .
