EdS in Mathematics Education (Grades 6‑12)

Introduction

The Ed.S. in Mathematics Education for grades 6-12 is designed for experienced secondary school mathematics teachers who hold a master’s degree and T-5 certification in secondary school mathematics teaching and wish to further their study of mathematics education.

The program of study is planned as a logically organized whole, taking into account courses completed in the master’s degree program. This program also requires the completion of an applied project.

Curriculum

This degree includes at least 29 hours of coursework and an applied project. The program is planned as a logically organized whole and individualized for you, reflecting your prior education and experience.

Your coursework focuses specifically on preparing you for an advanced role in teaching and/or supervising mathematics teachers.

Together, the M.Ed. and Ed.S. degrees include the following:

• 6 hours of educational foundations
• 12 hours of mathematics-specific curriculum and instruction and two 1-hour seminars
• 33 hours of MATH, STAT, and EMAT courses (at least 15 hours of which must be taken at UGA)
• 6 hours of research methods
• 3 hours of an applied project

Part 2: Apply to the Ed.S. in Mathematics Education (Grades 6‑12)

We base admissions decisions on a variety of factors, including past performance in coursework, especially mathematics coursework; GPAs in past degree programs; entrance exam scores; and letters of recommendation.

Applicants can submit their official GRE or MAT scores during the application process, but these are not required.

While completing the Graduate School application, you will need to provide the following:

• 3 letters of recommendation: You will identify your letter writers and their email addresses when you apply, and they will receive an email from the Graduate School asking them to complete the form online. Choose recommenders who know your academic work well and can speak to your capacity to engage in graduate-level study of mathematics, to perform well in courses requiring high levels of reading and writing, to work as a classroom teacher, and to be successful in a graduate program. Do not solicit “character references” from friends, family, or people you know socially.
• Transcripts: Applicants should submit unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended as part of the online application. Official transcripts are not required during the review process and will only be required for applicants who are offered admission. Do not mail official transcripts until offered admission.
• If submitting test scores: Have your GRE scores sent directly to UGA using the institution code 5813.
• Statement of purpose: Please tell us why you are interested in the program for which you’re applying. Please include any relevant experiences that have driven your interest.
