EdS in Mathematics Education (PreK-8, Griffin Campus)

Become a leader in mathematics education in grades prekindergarten through eighth grade with our EdS in Educational Specialist program.

We designed this program for experienced math teachers who hold a master’s degree and T-5 certification in elementary or middle school. You will deepen your subject knowledge while learning new teaching methods and completing an applied project. K-5 teachers will have the option of earning the K-5 mathematics endorsement.

Curriculum

Designed for full-time teachers, this program will help you improve your teaching of math concepts, prepare your students to be powerful math thinkers, and become a leader in shaping math education.

The coursework covers a wide-range of topics, including:

• The major content areas of the PreK-8 math curriculum
• Learning theory
• Methods of instruction
• Research
• Effective use of technology
• Manipulatives

You will complete 33 hours of coursework over two years plus an applied project. Coursework entails:

• 15 hours studying math concepts including arithmetic, geometry, algebra, probability, and statistics
• 12 hours of pedagogy classes, including methods to teach arithmetic, geometry, and algebra
• 6 hours of research courses

You will progress through the coursework with a cohort of your peers, which provides the opportunity to learn from one another and make connections with other teachers around the state. You will take up to two courses each semester. Your coursework will include synchronous online classes, independent work, and six to eight in-person meetings at our Griffin campus per semester, all led by faculty with recent classroom experience.

Part 2: Apply to the EdS in Mathematics Education (PreK-8, Griffin Campus)

We base admissions decisions on a variety of factors including past performance in course work, especially mathematics course work, GPAs in past degree programs, written statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation.

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum 3.0 GPA in your undergraduate degree and 3.3 GPA in your master’s degree.
• Passing or exempting GACE I

While completing the Graduate School application, you will need to provide:

• 3 letters of recommendation: You will identify your letter writers and their email addresses when you apply, and they will receive an email from the Graduate School asking them to complete the form online. Choose recommenders who know your academic work well and can speak to your capacity to engage in graduate level study of mathematics, to perform well in courses requiring high levels of reading and writing, to work as a classroom teacher, and to be successful in a graduate program. Do not solicit “character references” from friends, family, or people you know socially.
• Transcripts: Applicants should submit unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended as part of the online application. Official transcripts are not required during the review process and will only be required for applicants who are offered admission. Do not mail official transcripts until offered admission.
• Statement of purpose: Please tell us why you are interested in the program for which you’re applying. Please include any relevant experiences which have driven your interest.
