Curriculum

Our MA degree program provides you with an opportunity to strengthen your content background and to develop your research skills. Through coursework and individual faculty guidance, you will develop the skills needed to conduct original research, making this degree a good precursor to a doctoral degree.

The MA degree is a 30-semester-hour program emphasizing research and theory. It is designed primarily for students who are interested in advanced knowledge about literacy and are not certified teachers. A thesis is required for completion of this degree.

In this program, you will study with faculty leading new and innovative research and teaching practices associated with literacy education. You will explore and analyze theories, issues, and approaches in the research of literacy across the lifetime (early childhood through adult learners), while developing research and inquiry skills to conduct your thesis project. You will be assigned a faculty advisor who will support you in the planning of your program of study, which includes the areas of education foundations; reading, writing, children’s literature and digital literacies; electives; and research-oriented courses. With the guidance and instruction of faculty with great contributions, publications, and accolades in the literacy field, this program will prepare you to engage in critical inquiry and analysis of issues in literacy education.

Degrees can be completed as a part-time or full-time student. Students have options to take courses in all face-to-face, all online, or some combination of face-to-face and online environments.
