MA in Education (Mathematics Education)
Further your explorations in mathematics and teaching concepts in our research-based, doctoral-prep MA in Mathematics Education program. We designed our master of arts degree program for students with a strong mathematics background or a background in mathematics education who are interested in doing research for a thesis.

Curriculum
Our program provides you an opportunity to strengthen your mathematics background, develop your research skills, and deepen your educational approach. Through coursework and individual faculty guidance, you will develop the skills needed to conduct original research, making this degree a good precursor to a doctoral degree.
You will take classes in three distinct areas:
- Educational Psychology: Learn the foundations of human development, motivation, and cognition for education.
- Curriculum and Instruction: Focus on teaching school mathematics and developing mathematics curricula.
- Content Courses: Take mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education courses that deepen your understanding of the subject matter and develop pedagogical expertise.
In addition, you must perform three hours of research and both write and defend a thesis.
Our program of study consists of 30 hours and requires:
- 6 content courses (at least three of which must have a MATH prefix)
- 2 curriculum and instruction courses
- 1 educational psychology course
- 3 hours of research
- A thesis
Your mathematics education faculty advisor must approve your course selection.

Part 2: Apply to the MA in Education (Mathematics Education)
We base admissions decisions on a variety of factors including past performance in course work, especially mathematics course work, GPAs in past degree programs, entrance exam scores, and letters of recommendation.
Minimum Requirements
- Completion of at least 2 semesters of calculus
Applicants must submit their official GRE or MAT scores during application. In recent years, students admitted to our master’s degree programs have earned average GRE (quantitative) scores in the 65th to 70th percentile and average GRE (verbal) scores in the 50th to 55th percentile. We also accept the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).
While completing the Graduate School application, you will need to provide:
- 3 letters of recommendation
You will identify your letter writers and their email addresses when you apply, and they will receive an email from the Graduate School asking them to complete the form online. Choose recommenders who know your academic work well and can speak to your capacity to engage in graduate level study of mathematics, to perform well in courses requiring high levels of reading and writing, to work as a classroom teacher, and to be successful in a graduate program. Do not solicit “character references” from friends, family, or people you know socially. - Transcripts
Applicants should submit unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended as part of the online application. Official transcripts are not required during the review process and will only be required for applicants who are offered admission. Do not mail official transcripts until offered admission. - Test Scores
Have your GRE scores sent directly to UGA using the institution code 5813. - Statement of purpose
