Our program is designed for credentialed secondary school teachers and leverages the experience of practicing professionals and distinguished faculty. As a student, you can take courses that fit a working teacher's schedule and that support your individual areas of interest.

Faculty and Curriculum

In this program, you will develop skills to support your students' reading and writing capabilities.

Our courses encourage you to connect your studies to your students' learning and developmental needs in meaningful and rich ways. We help you form these connections by considering not only the skills of the classroom teacher but also the emerging policy context, curricular goals, practices, and assessments.

Coursework combines traditional learning practices with new literacy and digital media. You will take courses in:

  • Teaching of writing
  • Teaching of language (including both grammar and an understanding of linguistic diversity and the politics of language usage)
  • Teaching of literature (including specific attention to young adult literature)

The program of study includes 36 hours over 12 courses broken down into:

  • Foundations (one course)
  • Curriculum and teaching (four English education courses)
  • Teaching field (three courses)
  • Research (one course)
  • Electives (three courses)

In addition to courses in secondary English instruction, you have the opportunity to take electives / teaching field courses that can:

  • Be used for gifted-in-field endorsement
  • Be used for English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsement
  • Include courses from the Online MEd in Reading Education with an emphasis in new and digital literacies (P-5 or 6-12)

Tuition and Financial Aid

Almost all in-state students begin their studies at UGA paying limited tuition or fees. Please note that these amounts are subject to change and are meant to give prospective students an idea of the costs associated with a degree at the University of Georgia College of Education.

Students may qualify for a variety of assistantships, scholarships, and other financial awards to help offset the cost of tuition, housing, and other expenses.

Admissions

Part 1: Apply to the University of Georgia

The Graduate School handles admission for all graduate programs at the University of Georgia, including those in the College of Education. The Graduate School website contains important details about the application process, orientation, and many other useful links to guide you through the process of attending UGA at the graduate level.

Part 2: Apply to the MEd in English Education

The MEd in English Education are required to submit either the GRE or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT), (and TOEFL/IELTS for international applicants). While completing your Graduate School application, please include the following documents:

  • Application Form
  • Current resume/CV
  • GRE or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation

Your 3 letters of recommendation should be from individuals who can evaluate your scholarly ability and potential for success in a graduate program.

Although the program recommends at least a 2.5 undergraduate GPA, most applicants greatly exceed that. Those candidates whose undergraduate grades do not represent their future potential should use the essay portions of the application to make their case for admission.
