Prepare for a career supporting students in elementary, middle, and secondary schools with our dual MEd/EdS in Professional Counseling (School Counseling).
Through our program, you will become an effective practitioner and researcher within the school setting. This is a full-time, nationally accredited degree program, and the required coursework leads to certification and licensure.
By completing your dual degree, you will qualify for initial certification as a school counselor in Georgia (S-6). To receive licensure, you will need to participate in extended supervised counseling experiences and complete an examination.
This CACREP accredited program in professional counseling, school specialty, was ranked #2 in the nation in 2018 (U.S. News and World Report). We have partnered with local school districts and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to offer specialized training to admitted students in integrative behavioral health, preparing our future counselors to deliver these programs and services in school settings. Additionally, students selected for this program will receive a stipend of $10,000 during year two (the internship year) of their graduate training.

For the 2016-2017 school year, twenty-one students graduated from the school counseling program. This is a 100% completion rate. Of this group, all twenty-one students obtained a passing score on the CPCE, the program's exit examination. The program also had a 100% job placement rate with 18 receiving positions with school districts in Georgia and three receiving school counseling positions out of state in Maryland, Minnesota, and Tennessee.
The mission of the program is to prepare counselors to work in elementary, middle, and secondary schools who are educational leaders and self-reflective practitioners; who serve as advocates for all students; who understand and apply principles of group work in building school and community partnerships; and who accept responsibility for improving educational practices through an active program of research and evaluation.

Almost all in-state students begin their studies at UGA paying limited tuition or fees. Please note that these amounts are subject to change and are meant to give prospective students an idea of the costs associated with a degree at the University of Georgia College of Education.
Students may qualify for a variety of assistantships, scholarships, and other financial awards to help offset the cost of tuition, housing, and other expenses.
Most graduate students at UGA are not assigned to a faculty advisor until after admittance. A close working relationship with your advisor is paramount to progressing through your program of study.
Clinical experiences begin during your second semester with a yearlong service-learning program at a local K-12 school. Your time on site will help you build relationships with school personnel from the very start.
Join research teams with faculty and doctoral students centered on issues of social justice, and help to advocate for school-aged children and marginalized populations.
We invite you to attend the Georgia School Counselors Association Annual Conference each year with program faculty. Many students are involved in campus organizations and community activities, such as the UGA School Counseling Association.
