We designed our Certificate in Mathematics Education program for PhD students in other programs who are interested in connections between mathematics and mathematics education. The program advances your knowledge across different departments of mathematics in order to give you a well-rounded foundation for teaching and teacher preparation. It is especially designed for PhD students in Mathematics and other STEM fields who have an interest in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

This program exposes you to a range of mathematics learning techniques through courses involving technology and problem solving, research, field experience or a practicum, and a selection of electives. We make the program extremely flexible by giving you a varied choice of required courses. To fulfill this program's requirements, you will take 15 semester hours of courses across various areas of focus that include:

  • Technology and problem solving
  • Research studies and methods
  • The critique of a math education
  • Field experience and practicum including an internship

We have designed the program to be flexible so that you can take advantage of the variety of offerings by our faculty and program, and several students have used the Certificate as a way to include mathematics education in their career trajectory.
