Faculty and Curriculum

We designed our Certificate in Mathematics Education program to advance your knowledge across different departments of mathematics in order to give you a well-rounded foundation for teaching.

This program exposes you to a range of mathematics learning techniques through courses involving technology and problem solving, research, field experience or a practicum, and a selection of electives. We make the program extremely flexible by giving you a varied choice of required courses. To fulfill this program's requirements, you will take 15 semester hours of courses in four areas of focus:

  • Technology and problem solving: Includes the integration of teaching and technology or problem-solving techniques
  • Research: Includes advanced study or the critique of a math education subgenre
  • Field experience/practicum: Includes an internship or project
  • Electives

We offer two options for your 3-hour technology and problem solving course:

  • Technology and secondary school mathematics
  • Problem solving in mathematics

Some of your options for fulfilling a 3-hour research course include the following:

  • Critique of literature in mathematics education
  • Advanced study of mathematics teaching and teacher education
  • Critical issues in mathematics education

You will also take at least one hour from both of the courses offered for the field experience/practicum requirement and at least three hours of electives offered in the math education field.
