Research Summary

Taiesha Smith's dissertation entitled, The Anatomy of Success: Academic Completion among African-American Students after a Hiatus, focused on retention and persistence. The qualitative study concluded that institutions of higher education must strive to develop programs and support for this diverse population in order to ensure success.


Taiesha is a native of Augusta, Georgia. She has several years of advanced leadership and management in public education developing teachers, curriculum, instruction, and students. She has worked in several metro-Atlanta school districts including Fulton, Dekalb, and Clayton. She served as a teacher, department chair, and an instructional site facilitator. Her involvement at the school, district, and state level, allowed her to gain the following experiences: generating rigorous assessments, spearheading Advanced Placement standardized teaching methods for all disciplines, and leading taskforces to produce effective instructional practices to increase student engagement, achievement, and success. Her passion includes improving student success for diverse populations as well as teacher development.
