Now in its fifth year, the Seat in the Shade Summer Poetry Series is excited to collaborate with Big Read's ongoing focus on Robinson Jeffers. Come enjoy a week of poetry readings and discussions of the poetic craft featuring six top Georgia poets. It will be hosted by UGA College of Education professor Melisa Cahnmann-Taylor.
Melisa "Misha" Cahnmann-Taylor is a professor of TESOL and world language education at UGA's College of Eductation, as well as the director of National Endowment for the Arts "Big Read–Jeffers Program" 2016. She is the 2015 winner of the Beckman Award for Professors Who Inspire, the 2013-14 winner of the Fulbright Award (Oaxaca, Mexico), and is the recipient of the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prizes and the Leeway Poetry Grant. Her book of poetry, "Imperfect Tense" (Whitepoint Press) will be published in July 2016, and she has co-authored two other books, "Teachers Act Up: Creating Multicultural Learning Communities Through Theatre" and "Arts-Based Research in Education." She has published numerous articles and poetry about language learning, sustainable or fragile states of bilingualism, and teacher education. Her poems have appeared in "American Poetry Review," "Women's Quarterly Review," "Cream City Review," "Barrow Street," "Puerto Del Sol," "Mom Egg," and many other literary homes. She judges the annual Anthropology & Humanism Poetry Contest and is the editor of the ethnographic poetry section.
