CLASE Instructional Conversation Summer Institute: UGA Gwinnett

Are you a Georgia educator interested in learning an innovative teaching model that has been found to positively impact the achievement of all children, especially culturally and linguistically diverse learners?

Join the Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education (CLASE) for 30 hours of professional development on the Instructional Conversation Pedagogy and its application. Teachers in Georgia who use this pedagogy say they are able to cover more material in greater depth. Our research has shown that all classrooms show academic gains in English-language arts, math, science, and social studies based on state assessments. Learn how integrating the listening and speaking standards into facilitated, conversation-based lessons can better prepare all of your students, particularly culturally and linguistically diverse students, for the Georgia Milestones.

The Summer Institute sessions are open to P-12 educators, administrators, instructional coaches, and counselors.

This program is designed to teach educators:

  • How to use a center-based approach to multiply the opportunities for in-depth interaction and contextualized learning to accelerate the academic success of your students
  • Evidence-based techniques and strategies for teaching rigorous content through teacher-facilitated conversation
  • The linguistics of language learning and how it applies in the classroom

Programs will be taught by Paula Mellom and Jodi Weber from the University of Georgia. Mellom is a former classroom teacher with a specialization in second-language acquisition and more than 20 years of experience working with teachers who teach non-native speakers of English. Weber is a retired school administrator with more than 30 years of experience teaching and working with teachers; she has a specialization in special education.

There are four opportunities to attend the Summer Institute: two four-day sessions and two intensive three-day sessions. The cost is $750 per person including all materials, instruction, and meals (and housing for the intensive three-day options). The dates for this summer are:

  • June 19-21 at Amicalola Falls State Park (three days, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. the first two days and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. the third)
  • June 26-29 at UGA's Gwinnett campus (four days, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.)
