UGA Global Educational Forum focuses on women in sport, education and health

University of Georgia faculty and invited scholars will discuss women's accomplishments and the challenges they face during the 8^th annual UGA Global Educational Forum titled, "Women in Sport, Education and Health," on Tuesday, March 18 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

"Women work in an increasingly interdependent and globalized world, in which they face social and cultural barriers to success in the workforce. This year's forum focuses on ways women have been empowered with decision-making opportunities as framed through millennium goals or challenged with obstacles that prevent or limit their advancement in social institutions," said Rose Chepyator-Thomson, a professor in the College of Education's Department of Kinesiology, who is the founder and program director of the forum.

Keynote speeches and faculty presentations will be made from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Masters Hall. The forum brings together scholars from around the world and close to home, including:

Kokanko Sata Doumbia, a distinguished African female musician from Mali, will kick off the event with a performance at 8 a.m.
Margaret Kamar, professor and former Minister of Higher Education in Kenya, will give the opening keynote address titled, "Women in Education and Development in Kenya: Challenges and Achievements in Context of Millennium Goals," at 8:10 a.m.
Susan Tanner, associate professor in anthropology, UGA, will speak on, "Women in Transition: A Case Study of Nutrition and Health in Lowland Bolivia," at 9:30 a.m.
Shan Hui Hsu, associate professor, National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan and visiting scholar in the Department of Kinesiology, UGA, will speak on, "The Influence of Gender and Sex on Taiwanese Women in Sport," at 11 a. m.
Vicki Michaelis, the John Huland Carmical Distinguished Professor in the Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communication, will give a luncheon address titled, "Women in the Press Box: Their Rise and Impact on the Sports Industry," at 12:45 p.m. (invitation only)
Student poster presentations will be from 2-3:15 p.m. and award presentations will follow at 3:20 p.m.
Mary McDonald, professor and Homer Rice Chair in Sports and Society, Georgia State University, will give the closing keynote address on "Women in Sport, Education and Health: Piecing them Together," at 3:30 p.m.
