Miller named 2014 Georgia School Counselor of the Year
College of Education alumna Stacey Miller was recently named 2014 Georgia School Counselor of the Year by the Georgia School Counselors Association (GSCA).
Miller (BS '04, MEd '06, EdS '08) is the counselor at Roberts Elementary School in Gwinnett County. She was part of the inaugural staff of the new school when it opened in 2010 with more than 700 students.
Roberts Elementary Principal Dion Jones credits Miller with having a direct impact on student academic achievement as she targets students to assist who need additional support. For example, during the 2011-12 school year, Roberts Elementary's Local School Plan for Improvement called for closing the achievement gap between Hispanic, African-American and white students in the areas of reading and mathematics. Miller designed and implemented an Academic Advisement Small Group plan focusing on goals, work habits and test-taking skills. At the end of the school year, 67 percent of the students Miller had worked with performed in the "exceeds" category in both subject areas in the state's Criterion-Referenced Competency Test.
Before coming to Roberts Elementary, Miller was part of the counseling team at Riverside Elementary, also in Gwinnett County. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology, a master's degree and specialist's degree, both in school counseling in the Department of Counseling and Human Development Services.
