Congratulations to Clarke County School District superintendent Phil Lanoue, who was named superintendent of the year in a ceremony Thursday afternoon at the annual conference of AASA, the School Superintendents Association.

The National Superintendent of the Year honor was selected from four finalists, all superintendents at school districts in the Southeast. The honor comes after Lanoue was named Georgia's superintendent of the year in December, and named to the short list of national finalists just before Christmas.

Lanoue has been superintendent at Clarke County for six years, and during his tenure the district has been named a Title I Distinguished district for its success in closing the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged students. All middle and high schools are now International Baccalaureate Authorized World Schools.

He is also key in the success of the Professional Development School District, a partnership between the school district and the College of Education that brings teacher candidates into schools across the country, giving them hands-on training and experience.
