Event honors area's STAR student, teacher

The University of Georgia College of Education recently hosted Professional Association of Georgia Educators' Region Four event, honoring a student and teacher from Clarke Central High School.

Tomislav Zabcic-Matic, a senior at Clarke Central, was named STAR student, and he selected Ian Altman, his AP English language and literature teacher at Clarke Central, as his STAR teacher. The event took place March 24 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

The Professional Association of Georgia Educators, or PAGE, honors outstanding students and educators through the annual Student Teacher Achievement Recognition event. The program, now in its 57th year, is co-sponsored by the PAGE Foundation and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. To be nominated, high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the three-part SAT and be in the top 10 percent, or among the top 10 students, in their class based on grade-point average.

Zabcic-Matic will now compete statewide for the honor of state PAGE STAR student.

Altman is a 2006 a graduate of the UGA College of Education and has been teaching at Clarke Central since receiving his degree. He is a member of the College's Board of Visitors and a recipient of the College of Education's 2014 Crystal Apple Award for teaching excellence.
