Researchers' book honored by continuing education organization

A book that explores the theory and practice behind adult learning, co-authored by two researchers from the University of Georgia College of Education, has won an award from the University Professional & Continuing Education Association.

"Adult Learning: Linking Theory and Practice," by Sharan B. Merriam and Laura L. Bierema, is the recipient of the 2014 Phillip E. Frandson Award for Literature, which recognizes an outstanding work of continuing higher education literature. The book blends research with practical applications to give master's-level students and professionals an understanding of the forces that influence adult learners.

This is the second honor for the book, which also received the R. Wayne Pace Human Resource Development Book of the Year Award last year from the Academy of Human Resource Development.

Bierema is associate dean for academic programs and professor in the department of lifelong education, administration and policy, and has received many awards for her work in career development, organization development and workplace learning. Merriam is professor emerita of adult education and qualitative research who focuses her work on the foundations of adult education.
