UGA science education researchers dominate new handbook

A new landmark research handbook on science education includes five sections written or edited by University of Georgia College of Education faculty — more than any other university.

The _Handbook of Research on Science Education Volume II _(2014) is a comprehensive new volume highlighting emerging research in areas of science learning, and contributors are all experts in their research areas. Faculty from the College of Education who contributed include:

• Cory Buxton and Okhee Lee (section editors for Diversity and Equity in Science Learning and authors of English Learners in Science Education)
• J. Steve Oliver and Georgia Hodges (authors of Rural Science Education: New Ideas, Redirections, and Broadened Definitions)
• Barbara A. Crawford (author of From Inquiry to Scientific Practices in the Science Classroom)
• Julie Luft and Peter W. Hewson (authors of Research on Teacher Professional Development Programs in Science)

The book is organized around six themes that delve into different social issues that affect science learning, curriculum and assessment and teacher education. Each chapter pulls together existing research and examines historical trends and patterns, plus describes how that particular topic is discussed in literature and theories that have shaped outcomes of the research. The book offers guidance to science education faculty and graduate students, giving them a starting point for the next generation of research.
