The Black Male Leadership Society was named the University of Georgia's "Organization of the Year" during the 14th Annual H. Gordon and Francis S. Davis Student Organization Achievement and Recognition Awards, given out April 8 at the Tate Student Center.

The SOAR Awards celebrate the accomplishments of student organizations at UGA.

"I am incredibly proud of the work the Black Male Leadership Society has done this year within our community, across campus and within the Athens community," said Charles E. King, a senior middle grades education major from Atlanta and chief executive officer for the society. King helped relaunch the organization during his sophomore year, and it now has around 75 members.

The service organization serves as a connector among African-American men on campus, and also works to recruit incoming students. Along with community service projects and orientation efforts for incoming freshmen, King's work with the group has also resulted in an annual formal, an outing for tips on men's style in the business world, and alumni events.
