Professor emerita inducted into the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship

Lorilee Sandmann, professor emerita in the department of lifelong education, administration and policy, was recently inducted into the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship (ACES) for her longtime professional commitment to community engagement and community-engaged scholarship.

The Academy, which is supported by the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, "provides a non-partisan, transdisciplinary, research and practice-based voice for community engagement scholarship through its cultivation of partnerships with national and international associations, groups and initiatives."

Members of ACES are renowned researchers and practitioners who are devoted to scholarship that serves the public good and has a direct positive impact on complex societal needs and issues.

"It is an honor to join such an esteemed group devoted to the application of the principles of community engagement as a higher education institutional strategy and as a scholarly act," said Sandmann. "ACES provides a platform for wise, collective action."

Through its members, ACES can leverage the learning, discovery and engagement capacity of higher education institutions and communities to influence private and public leaders. The Academy also offers a forum for publishing best practices on community engagement and scholarship.

After 42 years in higher education, Sandmann formally retired from the University of Georgia this past June.

Her current work includes investigating actors of community engagement—particularly institutional leaders and those in boundary-spanning positions; supporting and mentoring emerging community-engaged scholars; and serving as the executive editor of the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement.
