Four alumni of the College of Education were appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal earlier this year to state-level boards.

The appointments span areas that touch education, health and wellness, and recreation across Georgia. For one alumnus, the post is a reappointment, while for others the role is a new way to draw from their talents.

Matt Arthur: Southern Regional Education Board Legislative Advisory Council Matt Arthur (B.S.Ed. '56, M.Ed. '60, Ed.S. '73) is deputy commissioner for the Technical College System of Georgia. A former teacher, coach and administrator at the secondary and technical education levels, Arthur also served as superintendent off the Rabun County School district for 13 years. His reappointment to the Southern Regional Education Board's Legislative Advisory Council positions Arthur as one of several Georgia representatives to recommend policy to the larger board, which comprises members from 16 Southeast states.

Lisa Leiter: State Rehabilitation Council A transition specialist for the Cobb County School District, Lisa Leiter (B.S.Ed. '93) was appointed to the State Rehabilitation Council, a federally mandated council of Georgia residents to represent people with disabilities and stakeholders. Leiter and her family served as the ambassador family for the March of Dimes Cobb Signature Chefs Auction in 2013 and she was named "Volunteer of the Year" by Cobb Life magazine in 2014.

Carl Kinney: State Rehabilitation Council Also appointed to the State Rehabilitation Council, Carl Kinney (B.S.Ed. '73) is a retired special education teacher for the Griffin-Spalding County School System. Kinney was previously a member of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities' Human Rights Council and Executive Quality Council. Kinney, Leiter and others on the State Rehabilitation Council will collaborate with the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency to plan services and other recommendations to help people with disabilities achieve independence.

L.C. "Buster" Evans: Jekyll Island State Park Authority With many years of experience in Georgia's schools, L.C. "Buster" Evans (Ed.D. '91) will now turn some of his attention to the stewardship of Jekyll Island as a newly appointed member of the Jekyll Island Authority. Evans is also the executive director of the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia, after a career that included serving as superintendent for the Bleckley County School System and Forsyth County Schools.
