This year, five students in the University of Georgia College of Education were initiated into UGA's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society. Election to membership is a distinguished academic honor.

Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is one of the country's most widely-known academic honor societies celebrating the liberal arts and sciences. With only about 10 percent of graduates in this field invited to join, the society's chapters invitation for induction is one of the most selective in the nation.

The 2017 College of Education students selected for membership are:

  • Juliana Lima, world language education
  • Meredith Miles, early childhood education
  • Katherine O'Hara, world language education
  • Amanda Piehler, science education
  • Gloriana Thomas, mathematics education

In addition to recognizing students who have made outstanding intellectual achievements in the arts and sciences, Phi Beta Kappa also sponsors activities that advance studies in the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences.

Phi Beta Kappa membership shows commitment to the liberal arts and sciences and to freedom of inquiry and expression at America's leading colleges and universities. Membership provides a competitive edge in the marketplace by giving students a lifetime network of colleagues.

All UGA students were officially initiated into Phi Beta Kappa earlier this month during a public ceremony and reception at the UGA Chapel.
