College alumnus receives honor from national organization

An alumnus of the College of Education was recently honored by the American Psychological Association.

Dr. Larry Gerstein (M.A. '76, Ph.D. '83), a graduate of the College's counseling and personnel services program, received the American Psychological Association's 2019 Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology. This award is given in acknowledgment of "distinguished and enduring lifetime contributions to the international cooperation and advancement of knowledge in psychology," according to the organization.

The award will be presented during the American Psychological Association's annual convention this August in Chicago.

Gerstein is the George and Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Counseling Psychology at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he has worked since graduating from UGA in 1983. Gerstein is also director of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at Ball State, and in 2013 received a Fulbright award to research at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong.

His research expertise includes cross-cultural psychology, peace studies, social justice, emotional recognition and sports for youth development.

Gerstein is the second scholar with ties to the University of Georgia to receive the award in the past six years. A past recipient was Kathryn Norsworthy, a professor of counseling at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, who completed her post-doctoral respecialization at UGA.
