UGA professor emeritus co-authors new book on democratizing education

A new book co-authored by Carl Glickman, professor emeritus of the UGA Mary Frances Early College of Education, provides a set of practical guidelines for educational leaders striving to renew their schools.

"The Essential Renewal of America's Schools: A Leadership Guide for Democratizing Schools from the Inside Out," to be published by Teachers College Press this April, provides a three-part framework for schools, districts and community leaders focused on creating locally guided initiatives to accomplish local goals.

Co-authored by Ian Mette, an associate professor at the University of Maine, the book is filled with real-world examples, charts and illustrations that give teachers, principals, students, parents, central office personnel, school boards and community members exactly what is needed to enhance their schools. Building on Glickman's acclaimed book, "Renewing America's Schools" (1993), the text is a must-read for anyone involved with school change in today's divisive and complex times.

"For both Ian and myself, this book has been a labor of love and care," said Glickman, who has authored 16 books on school leadership, democracy and the moral imperative of public education. "We hope that through school leadership and commitment, we can all be part of creating a more promising and healthy democratic society."

Ultimately, their book provides a roadmap for using classroom applications to replace dependence on top-down state and federal regulations while explaining how schools can gain greater autonomy from strict external regulations.

Two of Glickman's books were named outstanding education books of the year by several national library associations, and his professional papers are archived at the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library at UGA.

Mette is an associate professor of educational leadership at the University of Maine whose research and teaching interests include instructional supervision, school reform and the merging of the two to drive meaningful improvement of educational systems. Specifically, his work targets how educators, researchers and policymakers can better inform one another to drive school improvement and reform policy.

"The Essential Renewal of America's Schools: A Leadership Guide for Democratizing Schools from the Inside Out" will be available on the Teachers College Press website on April 17.
