Doctoral student selected to serve on National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education task force
Marques Dexter, a fifth-year doctoral student in the department of kinesiology, has been invited to serve as a student representative on the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education's (NADOHE) Creating a Framework for Advancing Anti-Racism Strategy on Campus task force. He will be one of two graduate students selected to serve.
The task force will have the latitude to recommend a framework that is built upon existing scholarship, input from Town Hall participants and content expertise from NADOHE's board of directors and members. Dexter will provide insights from a student-perspective and be considered a full committee member to assist in crafting the overall framework in addition to highlighting anchors within the designated focus areas of the plan.
"Being selected to contribute to this committee and devising strategies to advance inclusivity and belonging throughout campuses across the nation is humbling," he said. "Our country is filled with diverse individuals from many different cultures. We can no longer rely upon traditional ways of operating. New strategies must be implemented so that institutions can ensure everyone feels as if they can both thrive and belong, regardless of their identities. The framework resulting from this task force will undoubtedly allow for institutional leaders to do just that."
The committee will create a draft plan to report during the national conference on Wednesday, March 10, gathering feedback to later finalize by the end of the academic year.
