Alumnus named associate vice president for student affairs

Demetrius D. Smith, an alumnus of the Mary Frances Early College of Education’s department of counseling and human development services, was recently named associate vice president for student affairs at the University of Georgia.

Smith will oversee three departments within student affairs — International Student Life, the Pride Center, and Multicultural Services and Programs — and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion goals for students across campus.

“The University of Georgia is passionate about ensuring students experience a sense of belonging,” Smith said. “Being a first-generation college student, I am personally invested in advocating for students and doing everything I can to build, connect, engage, and collaborate with them on ways to enhance their college experiences and environment.”

He earned his Ph.D. in student affairs leadership from the College and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Georgia Southern University.

Smith currently serves as special assistant to the vice chancellor for equity, diversity, inclusion, and student affairs at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. He will begin his new role on Feb. 1.
