Juanita Johnson-Bailey, a professor of adult education in the Mary Frances Early College of Education’s Department of Lifelong Education, Administration, and Policy, received the Exceptional Service in the Field Award from the Adult Higher Education Alliance (AHEA).

The award recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of adult and higher education and to AHEA through teaching, service, or professional activities.

“I am very honored to be recognized by the Adult Higher Education Alliance,” Johnson-Bailey said. “Yet it seems ironic to be given an award for providing service to students and to a field that I love because I’ve gotten so much in return. My work in higher education has been very rewarding.”

Johnson-Bailey joined the University of Georgia faculty in 1995 and served as director of the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies from 2009-2022. She was named a University Professor in 2018 and a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2010. Her previous honors include the Women’s Studies Faculty Award and Centennial Professorship in 2022, as well as the 2022 Zenobia L. Hikes Woman of Color in the Academy award from Virginia Tech.

The Exceptional Service in the Field Award will be presented at the 2026 AHEA Conference in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday, March 19.
