Mary Frances Early was recently inducted into the Athens Music Walk of Fame for 2026 in honor of her lasting impact on music education and the Athens community.
The Athens Music Walk of Fame recognizes artists who have contributed to Athens’ musical legacy, making the city a destination for music fans. Visitors can view Early’s plaque on College Avenue near Clayton Street.
“I was thrilled to learn that I had been chosen as a recipient of the Athens Music Walk of Fame,” said Early, who was inducted alongside Elite tha Showstoppa, Hugh Hodgson, The Jesters, and Wuxtry Records. “I am certainly aware of the many outstanding bands and musical artists who have received this award, but I never dreamed that a music educator like me could be so honored.”
A trailblazer in education and the namesake of the College, Early developed a passion for music at just 8 years old. She began piano lessons in Atlanta and played a variety of instruments in high school and beyond. These experiences laid the foundation for her distinguished career as a music educator and mentor.
The annual nominations of inductees are selected by a committee appointed by the Athens-Clarke County mayor. During the selection process, committee members consider honorees’ contributions to the identity of Athens, established career, cultural and racial representation, distinct musical style, and historical context.
“The significance of this wonderful award makes it clear that even music educators can aspire to such heights,” said Early. “I am truly honored to be counted among the outstanding musical artists who have also been honored in this manner.”
Created in 2020, the Athens Music Walk of Fame is administered by the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Arts Division and supported by community partnerships, including the Athens Downtown Development Authority and the Athens-Clarke County Transportation and Public Works Streets & Drainage Division.
