National GENIUS Center

National Center on Generative AI for Uplifting STEM+C Education

  • Title: GenAI Empowered National Initiative for Upholding STEM+C Education
  • Award period: 5 years (09/2024-08/2029)

Overall Objectives

This project focuses on leveraging Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to address critical challenges in STEM+C education. Recognizing the necessity for a proficient workforce in these fields for national economic growth, security, and global competitiveness, this initiative advocates for early education in STEM+C, integrating computational thinking and artificial intelligence from pre-kindergarten to grade 12.

The National GENIUS Center aims to pioneer multimodal learning environments by developing GenAI learning agents (GenAgent) using multimodal Large Language Models (LLMs), thereby transforming traditional education methods. This approach seeks to create engaging, multimodal, and equitable learning opportunities that are interdisciplinary, technology-empowered, and aligned with the multifaceted nature of STEM+C disciplines. By addressing key research questions on the development and effectiveness of GenAgent in facilitating multimodal learning and improving STEM+C outcomes, the project emphasizes the importance of multimodal collaborative learning environments, open-sourced disciplinary-based LLMs, and the responsible use of GenAI pedagogies.

This project involves a diverse, interdisciplinary team from multiple research institutions and aims to address educational disparities, promote educational equity, and prepare students for an AI-driven future, thereby bridging the current divide and fostering a generation of learners equipped to excel in the evolving landscape.
