When to apply

Department / Office

Allman MAT Student Teaching Semester Scholarship

Candidates must be a MAT student who will be student teaching in the Department of Educational Theory and Practice in the College of Education.

Scholarships can only be awarded for the semester in which the candidate is engaged in student teaching.

Candidates must be approved for student teaching in the semester for which the application has been submitted.

Ann Jewett Award

One distinguished assistantship per year is awarded to a Kinesiology graduate student with the following attributes: earned outstanding undergraduate and graduate GPAs of 3.5 or higher; plans a career in physical education curriculum and instruction for K-12 or higher education and/or administration; demonstrates potential for excellence in teaching, research or service in the field of physical education curriculum and instruction. A plaque presented at the Kinesiology Awards Banquet and a 9-month, one-half time graduate assistantship involving 1/3 time teaching and 1/6 time research are awarded. Students must have at least one year of study remaining.

Board of Visitors Scholarship

This scholarship is available to an undergraduate COE student who establishes financial need. Candidates must state their intent to make a career in Education.

Bothe-Marcotte Scholarship

The intent of the Bothe-Marcotte Scholarship is to recognize undergraduate students who have lived with speech or language disorders or craniofacial syndromes or anomalies. First preference is given to University of Georgia undergraduate students (enrolled or accepted to enroll) who have received speech-language pathology or speech therapy services at any time in their lives, or who have been diagnosed with any craniofacial syndrome, anomaly, or disorder. Applicants must have a current cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher. Preference may be given to qualified applicants with demonstrated financial need or who are first-generation college students. In the absence of qualified applicants who meet the above criteria, the selection committee may choose in any year to award this scholarship to an undergraduate student with demonstrated interest in craniofacial anomalies as a career path.

Bruce Scholarship

Eligible applicants must be a doctoral student in the Educational Administration and Policy program. Criteria for selection include student need and professional promise.

Carol J. Fisher Award for Excellence in Research

This award is open to any full-time LLE doctoral student who (1) has been nominated by one of the focus areas for nominees distinguished record of doctoral scholarship and (2) has not been a previous awardee.

Clifford Gray Lewis Financial Assistance Award

Full-time undergraduate majors in the Department of Kinesiology in need of financial assistance to continue their education. The award can be received more than once.

Clifford Gray Lewis Scholarship Award

A plaque and $1,000 scholarship award is presented to selected full-time undergraduate Health and Physical Education majors in the Department of Kinesiology. To be eligible, students must be admitted to teacher education, possess a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average, must have completed 60 total hours and 15 hours in major courses toward the BSEd, and must have shown a commitment to the profession of physical education. The award can be received only once.

COE Centennial Scholarship

This scholarship is available to College of Education undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance. Candidates must have at least two (2) semesters remaining in their degree program. Candidates must have an established financial need. Please present evidence of leadership ability and professional interest in your personal essay.

Currently enrolled master's students studying intellectual or developmental disabilities in in the special education program are eligible to apply.

D. Keith Osborn Scholarship

Awarded to an undergraduate and graduate student majoring or with an emphasis area in early childhood education, middle grades education, or elementary education who are scheduled to graduate in the upcoming fall, spring, or summer semesters. The award criterion is academic achievement, conceived of broadly.

GCTM sponsors a host of grant opportunities, including the mini-grant program, implemented to provide funding for creative teaching projects with awards up to $300. Hubbard-Burton Study Abroad (COST) Scholarship

Currently enrolled graduate students studying autism spectrum disorders or the education of persons with autism spectrum disorders are eligible to apply for the Jan L. Branham Scholarship.

Jim Mann Scholarship in Elementary Education

Joan B. Neal Scholarship Award

A $1,000 award is presented to one full-time undergraduate Health and Physical Education major in the Department of Kinesiology. The Committee is charged to give close and careful attention to applications of well-qualified female candidates for assistance, although it shall in no way be bound to limit assistance from the fund based on gender of the candidate. The award can be received only once.

Jonathan Robert Scruggs Scholarship

This scholarship is available to undergraduate students majoring in Middle Grades Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, World Language Education, Social Studies Education, or English Education, and graduate students in the Community Counseling or Counseling Psychology programs. A minimum 3.5 GPA is required. After GPA, financial need will be considered.

Louise E. Kindig Research Award

One $1,000 award is available to a doctoral degree student and one $500 award is available to a master's degree student in the Department of Kinesiology on a competitive basis. Students must be enrolled in a Kinesiology degree program at the time of application. Proposals should be for research for which data collection has not started at the time of the application. The award is to be used to support the proposed research.

Mary Ella Lunday Soule Scholarship Awards

Undergraduate Awards

One $1,000 scholarship is awarded to the outstanding rising senior who has a commitment to the promotion of physical activity for girls and women. Full-time undergraduate students majoring in exercise and sport science, health and physical education or sport studies in the Department of Kinesiology with a 3.0 grade point average or above are eligible.

Graduate Awards

A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to the outstanding master's degree student and a nine-month, 41.6% time research assistantship is awarded to the outstanding doctoral degree student with a research interest in girls and/or women's health, physical activity and/or sport. Full-time graduate students majoring in exercise science or physical education and sport studies in the Department of Kinesiology with a minimum 3.65 graduate point average are eligible. Doctoral students must have at least one year of study remaining.

This scholarship is available to undergraduate students in a COE teacher education program. Candidates must be reliable, enthusiastic and show evidence of professional and service commitment for the promotion of specialization in the teaching field in the state of Georgia. McGuffey Scholarship

Eligible applicants must be doctoral students in the educational administration and policy program. If interested, applicants' research must focus on the impact of a school's physical environment on teacher behavior, pupil behavior, and/or pupil learning.

Michael E. Penland Family Award

  • Applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in athletic training, exercise and sport science, health and physical education, or sport management within the Department of Kinesiology.
  • Applicants must have a 3.0 grade point average or above at time of submission.
  • Proposed projects can be research, service or outreach based but must align with the Exercise Is Medicine initiative and its paradigm that human movement (exercise, physical activity or reductions in sedentary time) is critical for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Note that projects can be newly proposed or on-going and should be planned to be completed by September 15th.
  • Applicants and proposed projects must have a faculty member within the Department of Kinesiology as a sponsor.
  • Recipients will be selected by a committee made up of Kinesiology faculty and a doctoral student.

Michael J Hendrickson Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is a financial need-based award for undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Education. Where available, the scholarship will give preference to a rising senior in the College demonstrating peer leadership and a commitment to youth development through community engagement and/or youth ministry. The applicants must address their work in the community in their personal essays. If no such student is available in the given year, the scholarship is open to any undergraduate COE student with an established financial need.

Mike Castronis Scholarship Award

A $500 award is presented to one full-time undergraduate Health and Physical Education major in the Department of Kinesiology. Applicants must have completed 30-90 semester hours, a 3.0 GPA, exceptional character traits, and a desire to teach and guide young people. Financial need is considered. The award can be received only once.

Mullen Memorial Scholarship

Eligible applicants must be a doctoral student in the educational administration and policy program to apply.

The recipient(s) are to be chosen by a faculty committee named by the department chairperson and chaired by him/her. The committee should establish student need and professional promise as primary criteria, but in cases where all other factors are equal, should choose recipient(s) whose professional goals are in instructional supervision.

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Grants

Funding ranges from $1,200 to $24,000 and is available to help math teachers, prospective teachers, and other math educators improve the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Paul R Kea Scholarship

This scholarship is available to College of Education undergraduate freshman and transfer students of junior standing or less (90 hours earned or less). Students must have an established financial need. Candidates should have a career goal of serving the children of Georgia as a teacher or administrator. Priority will be given to students from the following counties: Emmanuel, Johnson, Oglethorpe, Clarke, Laurens (both county and city systems), and Jefferson City Schools. Supporting documentation is required from the principal of the school or superintendent and should be attached with application materials. Please note that any application that does not have this documentation will not be considered.

Paul Tappan Harwell Scholarship

Awarded to an undergraduate and graduate student majoring or with an emphasis area in early childhood education who are scheduled to student teach in either the fall or spring of the upcoming academic year. The award criterion is based equally on demonstrated financial need and academic achievement, conceived of broadly. The average award amount awarded to undergraduates is $750 with a minimum of $500. The average amount awarded to graduate students is $1,000 with a minimum of $500.

Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE)

The PAGE Foundation is dedicated to promoting excellence in Georgia's public schools. Toward this end, one of the many projects undertaken by the Foundation is to provide scholarships to enhance the teaching profession.

Rachel Sibley Sutton Scholarship

This scholarship is available to COE undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Early Childhood or Middle Grades Education. A minimum GPA is required: 3.0 for undergraduates and 3.5 for graduates. Candidates must have an established financial need. Candidates must show evidence of definite plans for a career in elementary or middle grades education (K-8) in the state of Georgia. Please address this in your personal essay.

This scholarship is available to graduate students who are enrolled in a COE teacher education program. Candidates must have taught five (5) or more years at the secondary level in the State of Georgia. Candidates must state their intention to make a career in secondary education in the state of Georgia. Preference will be accorded to candidates from Oconee and Clarke Counties. Sylvia McCoy Hutchinson Scholarship

This scholarship is a financial need-based award for an undergraduate student enrolled in the College of Education. With all other factors being equal, first priority in awarding the scholarship is given to a non-faculty staff member or his/her child in the College of Education. Second priority is given to a non-faculty staff member or his/her child of other University of Georgia schools, colleges, or departments. Third priority is the public at large. This scholarship has a separate application form and requires a personal essay (500 words or less).

TEACH Grants

To receive a TEACH Grant, you must:

  • Meet the basic eligibility criteria for the federal student aid programs
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA┬«)
  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, or graduate student at a school that participates in the TEACH Grant Program
  • Be enrolled in a TEACH-Grant-eligible program
  • Meet certain academic achievement requirements (generally, scoring above the 75th percentile on one or more portions of a college admissions test or maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25). For specific information about the academic requirements, talk to the financial aid office at your college or career school
  • Receive TEACH Grant counseling that explains the terms and conditions of the TEACH Grant service obligation. You must complete counseling each year that you receive a TEACH Grant
  • Sign a TEACH Grant agreement to serve

There are two federal loan forgiveness and loan cancellation options for teachers.

W. Owen Scott Fellowship for Academic Merit and Professional Promise

The Owen Scott Scholars Award is given annually to recognize outstanding student scholarship and to provide monetary support for student research in the Department of Educational Psychology. Eligible students are those in programs in the department and those who have not been previously awarded the honor.

Wells Fargo Scholars Program Scholarship

This scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students from underserved populations who are enrolled in the College of Education. Students must have established financial need. Underserved populations include, but are not limited to, the following conditions: (a) member of an underrepresented minority or ethnic group, (b) first generation college student, (c) raised in single parent household, (d) first language was not English, (e) from an inner-city or rural location. Other groups may also qualify as underserved. Please address this in your personal essay.
