Fund Purpose

This fund provides an award to a school psychology doctoral student(s) in the department who demonstrates academic excellence. The award is intended to offset the costs of their graduate degree, including travel to professional conferences or internship interviews, course materials, certification assessments or requirements, costs associated with thesis or dissertation research, or other related expenses deemed appropriate by the department head.

About the Donor

This fund was established by Bruce Bracken. Bracken is a proud College of Education Double Dawg, having obtained a Master of Arts in Education in 1977 and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology in 1979. As a professor at the College of William and Mary, and highly respected scholar, Bracken has authored numerous behavior and personality assessments, edited, and coedited academic volumes, and served on the editorial boards of several international educational and psychological journals, including co-founding the Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment.

In addition to his academic research and writing, he has authored three novels. A self-titled “blue collar scholar” from a rural background, Dr. Bracken joined the Air Force after high school, earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston in less than three years, and continued his education in the University of Georgia’s School Psychology Ph.D. program.

In 2012, UGA’s College of Education honored him with its alumni’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Throughout his career, he has served as mentor and friend to countless students and colleagues, who now recognize his lifetime of achievements by endowing an award in his honor on the occasion of his retirement.
