Fund Purpose

This fund provides scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students at the Mary Frances Early College of Education.

About the Donor

This fund was created by the planned estate gift of Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Simmons Odell. Dot graduated from Wesleyan College in 1932 and, in addition to degrees from Mercer University, she received her Specialist in Education degree from the College of Education at UGA in 1971. She taught in the Bibb County School System for four decades. Twice she was named as Bibb County Star Teacher and in 1975, following her retirement from Miller High School, she received the Gladys Thompson Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics in Georgia. She served as president of the Bibb County Teachers Association, Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Bibb County Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Macon Morning Music Club and volunteered for several years with Golden Opportunities.

For many years, Mrs. Odell was the volunteer leader of the Middle Georgia Chapter of the National Society for Prevention of Blindness, and she served on the Board of Directors of the Bibb-Jones Unit of the American Cancer Society, transporting elderly cancer patients to treatment centers. At the age of 96, Mrs. Dot Simmons Odell passed away on May 8, 2007. This fund will continue her legacy for years to come.
