Fund Purpose
This fund provides an annual award to a first year graduate student in the department of Counseling and Human Development Services who best represents the standards of leadership exemplified and taught by Edie Klein before her death. This award will signify to alumni and fellow students the importance that leadership in and out of the classroom holds. The student selected will be a leader among her or his classmates and will have assumed significant service roles in the University of Georgia, in Athens, and/or in the community from which they came.About the Donor
This fund was established in 1998 by Douglas Kleiber in honor of Edie Klein, a beloved educator and longtime member of the University of Georgia’s College of Education. Klein earned her bachelor’s degree from UGA and served on the faculty in recreation and leisure studies from 1965 until her retirement in 1992.
Throughout her career, Klein was deeply committed to education, recreation, and creating meaningful experiences for young people. For 20 years, she directed her own summer camp and later served as president of the American Camping Association. Her dedication to teaching, leadership, and service earned her numerous honors, including the College of Education’s Outstanding Teacher Award and the UGA Arch Award for Community Service.
Established in her honor, this fund celebrates Dr. Klein’s lasting impact on students and her belief in the power of recreation, education, and service to enrich lives and strengthen communities.
