Elmer Jackson Carson Memorial Scholarship

Named in memory of reading educator Elmer Jackson Carson, this award is presented to a Literacies and Children’s Literature graduate student interested in reading education and in need of financial support. Depending on available funds, one recipient is selected yearly for the minimum $750 award.

Eligibility

This scholarship is intended for full-time graduate students in the reading, writing, children’s literature, and digital literacies (Literacies and Children’s Literature) focus area who:

  1. Have interests in reading education
  2. Have been accepted or are currently enrolled
  3. Have financial need
  4. Are preferably pursuing master’s or educational specialist degrees
  5. Have not been a previous recipient

How to Apply

The nomination package includes the following:

  1. Two letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to the applicant’s academic potential and commitment to reading education
  2. A personal letter of justification that must detail the ways in which the applicant meets the evaluation criteria
  3. A cover page with the applicant’s name, graduate degree sought, address, phone number, and email address
  4. Authentic signatures and signature dates

The nomination package should be electronically submitted by March 15 to the Elmer Jackson Carson Committee Chair via email. Packages submitted after March 15 will not be considered.

Evaluation Criteria

  1. Evidence of superior academic achievement
  2. Evidence of at least two years of successful teaching experience
  3. Evidence of professional and/or service commitment to reading education
  4. Evidence of financial need (please do not submit financial records)
