- Two letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to the applicant’s academic potential and commitment to reading education
- A personal letter of justification that details the ways in which the applicant meets the evaluation criteria
- A cover page with the applicant’s name, graduate degree sought, address, phone number, and email address
- Authentic signatures and signature dates
The nomination package should be electronically submitted to the program coordinator for literacies and children’s literature by October 1 (Fall) or March 1 (Spring). Packages submitted after October 1 will not be considered.

Fund Purpose
This fund provides an annual scholarship award to a student in reading education and covers other necessary expenses which may arise from time to time relative to conducting said scholarship program.About the Donor
This fund was established in 1986 by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ferdinand “Ferd” Carson, Jr. in memory of Ferd’s mother, Marie “Elmer” Jackson Carson, honoring her lifelong dedication to education and literacy.
Elmer earned a diploma from Georgia State Normal School in 1922, a B.S. in 1929, and a master’s degree in education from Columbia University in 1933. She began her career as an elementary school teacher and principal before returning to Georgia, where she taught in several counties and devoted her career to improving reading instruction. She later served as a language arts consultant and continued teaching adults to read from her home after her retirement in 1971.
Her passion for education, particularly reading and literacy, remained a defining part of her life and is honored through this fund.
