Vienna and Salzburg: Where Language Meets Culture

Vienna:

  • Explore Vienna’s historic and cultural treasures, including Schönbrunn Palace, Hofburg Palace, and the Sisi Museum, while reflecting on Austria’s imperial history and cultural legacy.
  • Visit the Belvedere Palace and Museum, home to Klimt’s The Kiss and other iconic works of European art.
  • Engage in service-learning with local NGOs, gaining firsthand insights into refugee and migrant experiences.
  • Participate in a friendly sports match with refugee children, fostering connection and cultural exchange beyond language.
  • Take part in class meetings and guided discussions that connect field experiences with global concepts of language, identity, and power.
  • Tour the United Nations Headquarters, exploring the role of language in diplomacy and global governance.

Salzburg:

  • Experience the famous Sound of Music tour, exploring filming locations and scenic landscapes.

Deadline to apply: October 1, 2025

As part of the application, students are asked to submit a brief (80–100 words) paragraph describing why they are interested in the Language, Power, and Globalization program in Austria.

  • LLED 5077/7077 Language and Globalization (3 credits)

This course examines the ways language shapes and is shaped by global forces, identity, and culture. You will combine classroom discussion with experiential learning in Vienna and Salzburg.

Dr. Usree Bhattacharya

Associate Professor, Department of Language and Literacy Education

Dr. Bhattacharya has directed or co-directed study away programs in Austria, Germany, England, and Costa Rica. Her teaching and research explore the intersection of language, power, and identity, and she brings a wealth of interdisciplinary and global experience to this program.
